Mechanical System:

No matter how good your software and electronics are, if you don't have a solid platform to work off of, you won't be going anywhere. One of our design goals from the start was to try and incorporate as much commercial off the shelf, COTS, components as possible. Lucky for us, we were donated a Ranger II Storm Series powered wheelchair. Since the powered wheel chair was designed for the average user, we knew it would be durable and reliable. Plus, it already had motors, wheels, motor controllers, and anything else you need for a basic platform. In addition to this, it had a differential drive system making it highly maneuverable. The rest of this section of the site documents the chassis of Calculon in detail from the main chassis, modifications, mounting and placement of electronics, to the cover design.
